Well … before the years ends tonight I thought I’d share another mix with y’all … this is my top ten albums of 2009 … I’ve chosen two songs from each album that I felt were the high points … It’s in reverse chronological order … I saved the best for last … there were so many albums that I enjoyed this year and it was incredibly hard to dwindle the list down just to ten … but here you are … enjoi what 2009 had to offer …

NOW is a free arts and entertainment magazine that comes out of Toronto … I found their Vimeo account where they have a bunch of live performances from bands from or touring through Toronto … I used to live there for several years and I love how so many bands tour through the city … in fact, I plan on visiting Toronto next week for a few live shows and to reconnect with a city I’ve grown to love/hate over the years …

I’m pretty excited to see Spiral Beach the band in the video above live for the first time during my visit to Toronto … again a live performance captured to be shown online … it’s also shot at an amazing record store in Toronto called Sonic Boom … seeing this video made me want to see the band live even more after I heard their record … I’m starting to really enjoy people going out and documenting these performances … obviously the filmmakers have been given permission to film and feature these performances online … which to me is awesome for exposure of independent artists …

I’ve really enjoyed coming across a lot of these collaborations around the continent that are showcasing live performances by independent music artists … this site that I’ve come across has tons of performances by bands I love … in particular is one of my current favorites The Spinto Band did a performance with Laundromatinee that I’ve become pretty fond of … In the future I’d like to do more film work with bands … sites like this one really encourage me to work more with musicians … I love documentation of performance … it makes bands that don’t tour as much as I’d like or haven’t had a chance to see because bands have a hard time coming through Santa Fe to perform live shows a little more accessible than before …

This short film deals with 50 people being interviewed and being asked one question … “What Is Your Secret” … It’s a really interesting way to approach random people … I love the responses they get … it’s shot and edited really well and it’s very intriguing … the spontaneity of it all is incredible …

I find it interesting how open people are about their personal lives in this film … It makes me wonder how the filmmakers were able to get the subjects comfortable enough to reveal some pretty personal information about themselves to total strangers … I really hope a lot of this film wasn’t staged …

I came across this video of a future tablet device being developed by Microsoft called Courier. It’s a dual 7-inch screen that has multi-touch,it’s designed for writing, flicking and drawing with a stylus, in addition to fingers. After seeing the video demo for it I was blown away by how seamless it works … It’s a real device that is nearing completion and hopefully will available in the new year …

It’s astonishing that technology is moving leaps and bounds … this tablet device has so much potential and I can’t wait to see how useful it becomes in the future … there will obviously be more types of this technology and even direct competitors with similar devices … I’m really curious to see how filmmaking technology will respond and hopefully utilize these tablets to their advantage …

A while back I heard about this project by Nigel Godrich that would focus on intimate, live performances by musicians that wouldn’t have a host or live audience … Needless to say I was very intrigued and highly anticipated this project … at first the performances were only to be available for viewing online … when they realized that it wouldn’t make enough money to produce the quality they desired, so they approached some international TV networks … It then became an internet only download of episodes and eventually made it onto television …

I think they did an excellent job of capturing performances of some of my favorite musicians … it’s nice to see performance take the stage and make the entire process less formal … the quality of the video and performances is pretty top notch and I encourage everyone to visit the site and watch performance videos … you can do that here:
